Background of the Study
Election boycotts have been a recurring phenomenon in many democratic societies, including Nigeria, where political parties, interest groups, and voters sometimes resort to boycotting elections in response to perceived electoral injustices, mismanagement, or exclusion (Bello & Usman, 2023). In Birnin Kudu Local Government Area (LGA), Jigawa State, the decision to boycott an election can significantly affect the democratic process, both in terms of voter turnout and the legitimacy of election results. Boycotts, whether orchestrated by political parties or social movements, can undermine the credibility of elections and lead to questions about the representativeness of electoral outcomes (Abubakar & Haruna, 2024). This study seeks to explore the impact of election boycotts on democratic governance in Birnin Kudu, specifically examining how such actions can affect voter confidence, political participation, and the overall functioning of the democratic system.
